The biomedical engineering PhD is an intensive research program that mandates at least four advanced courses and a thesis defense. Candidates begin by joining the biomedical MSc program before transitioning to the PhD track, with prior coursework applying toward the doctoral requirements. Those entering with an existing MSc degree need only complete two graduate courses. Most students finish the PhD within four to five years. The department mandates financial assistance and faculty supervision for all doctoral candidates. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to potential advisors before submitting their applications.
The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with a grade point average of at least 3.3 in the last two years of undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from another institution.
