The First Nation Applied Economics Certificate delivers essential knowledge and practical skills to support the growth of economic systems within First Nations communities, focusing on residential and commercial business ventures.
This program is designed for individuals working in First Nation economic development, those engaged in business with First Nations, and government personnel at various levels involved in First Nation advancement.
Learning outcomes
After completing this program, students will be able to:
Utilize fundamental microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts to address challenges in First Nation economic growth.
Examine economic issues affecting First Nations, particularly concerning market inefficiencies and poverty.
Create and implement effective strategies for residential and commercial property development.
Encourage and support investment opportunities on First Nations territories by minimizing the substantial transaction costs linked to private and public investments.
Perform thorough economic feasibility and impact assessments for development projects on First Nation lands.
Develop and deliver professional reports on investment proposals.
Learning options
The First Nation Applied Economics Certificate is a collaborative effort between the Tulo Centre of Indigenous Economics, the First Nations Tax Commission, and Thompson Rivers University (TRU).
This blended program requires students to complete three out of six courses at TRU's Kamloops, BC campus. These intensive one-week seminars are facilitated by seasoned Tulo instructors. With limited class sizes, participants gain valuable insights through meaningful engagement with instructors and peers who share the vision of fostering social and economic progress on First Nation territories.
Pre-calculus 11 or Foundations of Mathematics 11 with a minimum C+ (or equivalent)
English Studies 12/English First Peoples 12 with a minimum of 73% (or equivalent)
Basic computer literacy with exposure to word processing and spreadsheet software
English Language Proficiency Requirements: TOEFL iBT - 88+ with no section below 20; TOEFL paper-based - 570+ TWE 4.5+; TOEFL Computer-Based - 230+ Essay 4.5+; IELTS - 6.5+ with no bands below 6.0; MELAB - 81+; CanTEST - 4.5+ with no component score below 4.0; CAEL - Overall 70+ No subtest below 60.
Deadlines for students of pre-assessment eligible nationalities (Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Iran and Nigeria): Fall: February 15, 2024. Deadlines for students of all other nationalities: Fall: March 1, 2024; Winter 2025: September 1, 2024.
