StFX proudly presents its course-focused Master of Applied Computer Science (MACS) program, designed as a two-year full-time academic journey. This program welcomes graduates holding a Computer Science bachelor's degree or equivalent coursework. Participants will explore diverse computer science specializations, equipping them for multiple career paths. The curriculum includes an optional workplace project course or cooperative education opportunity.
StFX's Computer Science department holds the distinction of being Atlantic Canada's premier program (Maclean's Magazine, October 2019). This recognition stems partly from the department's exceptional field-weighted citation impact, ranking first nationally for research productivity. The MACS program delivers advanced coursework tailored for industry readiness. Alongside this program, the department provides a research-focused Master of Science in Computer Science and undergraduate degrees, fostering a dynamic collaborative environment for computer science professionals and students.
Incoming students should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a major in Computer Science or related field. A degree in a related field is acceptable if the applicant shows evidence of a sufficient Computer Science background suitable for entry into the program as determined by the departmental Graduate Committee. The minimum background is the equivalent of all required courses of a StFX Major degree in Computer Science
Students who have completed undergraduate programs in related disciplines (e.g. business information systems) may be eligible for admission. If the applicant is missing some prerequisite courses, acceptance may still be recommended as long as the student has sufficient CS background. Alternatively, a student might be required to take qualifying courses at the undergraduate level.
Admission is competitive. The minimum admission average is 70.
The standard test is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). A minimum acceptable score of 580 for the written TOEFL or 236 for the computer-based version is required. The following other tests will be accepted with the specified minimum scores: IBT (internet based TOEFL) – 92; MELAB - 90; IELTS – 6.5; CanTest – average of at least 4.5 with no band score lower than 4.0; CAEL – 60 overall, with no band score lower than 50. The TOEFL is waived if the applicant has completed a degree at an institution where the language of instruction is English.
