For nearly 100 years, exceptional healthcare education has flourished at the Elizabeth and Thomas Rankin School of Nursing at StFX University, building upon the groundbreaking legacy of the Sisters of Saint Martha. Today, it stands among Canada's premier nursing programs, renowned for producing graduates distinguished by their compassion, clinical expertise, and professional dedication.
Nurses play a vital role in healthcare delivery across all levels - from individual patients to global populations. While the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted their indispensable contributions, nurses have long been the backbone of healthcare systems worldwide. With persistent nursing shortages across Canada and globally, the need for qualified professionals remains urgent and will continue for years to come.
At the Rankin School of Nursing, students experience a cutting-edge curriculum that develops skilled, compassionate, and critically-thinking nurses committed to health equity, social justice, and culturally safe practices. The program provides comprehensive preparation for diverse clinical settings and meets all requirements for the RN licensing examination. StFX's intimate learning environment fosters exceptional educational experiences and strong community connections.
Prospective students can enroll in a four-year, on-campus BSc in Nursing program after completing high school. The program begins each September, spanning eight semesters across four academic years (excluding summers), with graduation in May. High-achieving students may pursue an Honours designation within the standard four-year program.
The BScN Honours option replaces certain third- and fourth-year electives with specialized coursework and a faculty-supervised research thesis. Required courses include:
N395 Honours Thesis Seminar I (3 credits)
N498 Honours Thesis II (3 credits)
