Classical Studies examines the enduring impact of Greek and Roman civilizations across history. Engaging with classical texts serves as both a complement and resource for other liberal arts disciplines; StFX's passionate humanities faculty recognize this connection and strive to guide students in understanding these foundational cultures through their philosophical, theological, literary, artistic, and historical traditions.
The program provides opportunities to delve into both Ancient Greek and Latin writings. Students encounter Homer's epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey, along with works by renowned authors like Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Cicero, Caesar, and Catullus. The curriculum develops the linguistic proficiency needed to interpret original Latin and Ancient Greek texts.
