Anthropology examines humanity from diverse angles. While other academic fields like sociology analyze human societies, medicine investigates the physical body, and philosophy explores thought processes, anthropology synthesizes insights from these areas while offering its unique viewpoint. As an Anthropology student at StFX, you'll examine societal structures while probing essential inquiries about how human communities evolve and function. Distinguished professors will mentor you in critically analyzing societal development, investigating cultural variations, and understanding what distinguishes humans from other species.
Your introductory year will familiarize you with anthropological approaches and techniques across four key areas: human evolution, archaeology, social anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The foundational courses Introduction to Physical Anthropology/Archaeology (ANTH 111) and Introduction to Socio-cultural Anthropology (ANTH 112) provide comprehensive exposure to these core disciplines.
