The SCA's Doctor of Philosophy in Contemporary Arts is an intensive research program emphasizing interdisciplinary methods in fine and performing arts. This program accommodates both academic and practice-oriented research, allowing candidates to customize their studies according to their individual research focus.

Those adopting primarily academic approaches to visual culture, media arts, sound studies, and performance studies will enroll in established graduate seminars and develop a comprehensive written dissertation guided by prominent experts in their selected discipline. For practice-focused artist-researchers or those engaged in curatorial, programming, or public engagement work, the curriculum combines seminars with studio courses and individualized studies, culminating in either an innovative artistic creation or public exhibition accompanied by a significant written component that includes the candidate's critical analysis and contextualization.
