Modern library technologists combine technical expertise with social awareness and a dedication to continuous education. This profession is ideal for those passionate about literacy, education, and technological progress.
The demand for library technicians continues to grow as libraries evolve into comprehensive resource centers offering everything from printed materials to digital content and online services.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic's two-year Library and Information Technology diploma follows Canadian Library Association standards, keeping pace with technological developments and evolving patron requirements. Based at our Saskatoon location, this program trains students to assist professional librarians or independently oversee operations in smaller library settings.
The curriculum includes diverse introductory courses spanning multiple disciplines, including historical studies and literary arts. Students explore emerging technologies' societal effects, information access influenced by political and economic factors, digital preservation advantages and challenges, among other relevant topics.
Career Prospects
Library technologists enjoy more extensive employment options than commonly recognized. Positions exist in municipal, regional, and provincial public libraries, academic institutions at all levels, school districts, healthcare systems, government agencies, archival facilities, research organizations, and corporate environments.
Graduates may serve directly with patrons or focus on technical operations. While the diploma doesn't confer librarian status, it provides pathways to supervisory positions in library service departments or management roles in smaller library facilities.
