Exploring Ancient Greek and Roman cultures can help address contemporary societal issues. Ancient Studies examines the Mediterranean world in antiquity, serving as a foundational subject in the humanities that offers students a comprehensive understanding of the roots of Western literature, art, architecture, philosophy, and religion.

Gain a deeper understanding of humanity through the lens of Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern civilizations while honing critical thinking and writing abilities. Saint Mary's University's Ancient Studies program emphasizes social history, archaeology, art, and architecture from classical Greece and Rome.

In Ancient Studies, you can join a field school at the Roman imperial villa site of San Felice in Puglia, Italy. Experience firsthand the dynamics of imperial estates in southern Italy, including trade, slavery, and cultural transformation. Participate in archaeological research while learning excavation, surveying, artifact processing, environmental archaeology, photography, illustration, and artifact analysis techniques.
