For over 125 years, the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining at Queen's University has shaped leaders for the global mining industry. Currently standing as Canada's largest mining department and one of the world's most prominent, Queen's produces approximately 33% of all Canadian mining and mineral processing engineering graduates. As technological advancements and economic shifts transform the sector, our students and researchers remain at the forefront of mining innovation. Housed in Goodwin Hall, the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining features comprehensive lecture spaces, laboratories, and study areas. Our campus facilities include specialized labs for Rock Mechanics, Mine Environment studies, Computer Planning, and multiple Mineral Processing research spaces. The department also maintains an Explosive Test Site in nearby Hinchinbrooke Township. These well-equipped laboratories support both our academic programs and cutting-edge research initiatives across key mining disciplines. The proximity of undergraduate teaching spaces to graduate research areas creates an environment where practical professional skills meet visionary technological development.
Bachelor's degree in mining, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or other related engineering fields, with a B- average. Many of our students come from industrial backgrounds. Anyone without academic prerequisites will be placed on probation and required to take additional courses.
Those applicants whose native languages do not include English will be required to obtain satisfactory standing in an English Language Proficiency Test as part of the application process, and before final acceptance is granted. Applicants must meet the minimum score requirement in each test as well as the minimum overall score requirement.
Applicants must have TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): The minimum overall score is 88, made up of the minimum scores in each component test as follows: Writing test: 24/30; Speaking test: 22/30; Reading test: 22/30; Listening test: 20/30; MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
