Queen's University's Philosophy Department enjoys global acclaim for its outstanding research in political philosophy and related areas such as normative ethics, applied ethics (particularly animal ethics and bioethics), and legal philosophy. The Department also excels in continental philosophy, early modern thought, ancient philosophy, historical philosophy studies, metaphysics and epistemology, language philosophy, and philosophy of science. Among its distinguished faculty are eight Royal Society of Canada members (including seven fellows and one College of New Scholars member), Ontario's Research Chair in Bioethics, and Canada's Research Chairs in Political Philosophy and Legal Philosophy. Graduate students can choose from four programs: the traditional M.A., the specialized M.A. in Political and Legal Thought (PLT), the innovative J.D.M.A. in Political and Legal Thought, and the Ph.D. program.
Students must have Honours B.A. in Philosophy or equivalent.
Grades Required: An average of A- (in Philosophy courses only) is normally required to be competitive for admission.
English language requirements
Applicants must have TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): The minimum overall score is 88, made up of the minimum scores in each component test as follows: Writing test: 24/30; Speaking test: 22/30; Reading test: 22/30; Listening test: 20/30; MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
