For over 125 years, Queen's University's Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining has shaped leaders for the global mining industry. Currently standing as Canada's largest mining department and one of the world's most prominent, it has produced approximately 33% of Canada's mining and mineral processing engineering graduates. As technological advancements and economic shifts transform the sector, our students and researchers remain at the forefront of mining innovation. Through strong industry partnerships, our faculty and students continuously improve mining operations - enhancing safety, boosting efficiency, increasing productivity, reducing environmental impact, and optimizing costs. We invite you to consider joining our graduate program and discovering the possibilities within Queen's mining community. Housed in Goodwin Hall, our department features comprehensive lecture spaces, study areas, and specialized laboratories including Rock Mechanics, Mine Environment, Computer Planning, and multiple Mineral Processing facilities. Off-campus, we maintain an Explosive Test Site in Hinchinbrooke Township near Kingston. Our well-equipped labs support both academic programs and cutting-edge research across key mining disciplines. This integrated setup enables undergraduate instruction to occur alongside graduate research, fostering professional excellence while showcasing future industry potential.
Student must have Bachelor's degree in mining, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or other related engineering fields, with a B- average. Many of our students come from industrial backgrounds. Anyone without academic prerequisites will be placed on probation and required to take additional courses.
English language requirements
Applicants must have TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): The minimum overall score is 88, made up of the minimum scores in each component test as follows: Writing test: 24/30; Speaking test: 22/30; Reading test: 22/30; Listening test: 20/30; MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
