The Department of Political Studies at Queen's University has built a distinguished reputation for its graduate programs. Our intimate size allows for personalized attention, while our accomplished and diverse faculty deliver comprehensive training that prepares graduates for diverse career paths. We're especially recognized for expertise in studying ethnically diverse societies. Our M.A. program sharpens analytical abilities, while the Ph.D. prepares students for academic careers or leadership positions in political studies-related fields. Most students secure teaching assistantships, and we actively support conference participation through travel funding. Research assistantships with faculty are common, and we facilitate fieldwork opportunities while helping students build professional networks nationally and internationally.
Gender and Politics represents our department's most recent graduate specialization. This dynamic field has gained remarkable momentum across social sciences, becoming one of political science's most vibrant areas. It examines power structures through the lens of gender as a socially constructed category alongside other identities. Key explorations include: gender disparities in political/economic systems; same-sex marriage debates; gender's influence on political behavior and representation; feminist theory's relevance to justice and power; identity politics surrounding gender/sexuality; gendered analyses of institutions like governments and international bodies; gender dimensions in global issues like development and migration; and gender-aware policy analysis in domestic and international contexts.
