The doctoral program mandates that candidates successfully complete a comprehensive qualifying exam in geological sciences. Students can pursue their PhD through either the Engineering Council or Science Council. The Engineering track includes four term-length courses along with a thesis, while the Science track focuses solely on thesis work, as the Science Council doesn't mandate specific coursework—though supervisors or examination committees may require certain foundational courses to support thesis research.
Our Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering offers advanced study and research opportunities in Earth Sciences. Faculty expertise covers geology, geochemistry, and geoengineering, frequently through interdisciplinary approaches addressing economic and environmental challenges. Equipped with state-of-the-art geochemistry and geophysics laboratories, geomechanics computing resources, and access to Queen's Facility for Isotope Research, students conduct pioneering geoscience and geoengineering research. Additionally, they partner with industry leaders, government agencies, and global academic institutions while conducting fieldwork across six continents—delivering an unparalleled international educational experience. Cross-departmental collaborations are available with Queen's GeoEngineering Centre, Mining, Environmental Studies, and Civil Engineering departments.
Applicants must have degrees in Geological Sciences or Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering are acceptable. Degrees in related fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Sciences or Geography are seriously considered, however students will be required to take additional Geology courses. We consider your work over the last 4 years with emphasis on the last 2 years of schooling.
