The Biology Department at Queen's University stands as one of the most extensive academic units on campus, supporting around 100 graduate students guided by 32 faculty members. Research spans diverse areas such as Animal Physiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour, and Plant Sciences. Our distinguished faculty includes Canada and Queen's Research Chairs, along with recipients of prestigious national and international accolades for both research and teaching. Explore our department website and faculty profiles to discover more about our programs and research accomplishments. Students engage with a rigorous curriculum within one of Canada's premier Biology departments, supported by cutting-edge infrastructure for cellular, biochemical, molecular, ecological, and evolutionary studies. Facilities include a confocal microscopy suite, DNA sequencing services, aquatic research labs, and an advanced phytotron. Nearby, our field station encompasses over 3200 hectares of woodlands, fields, and lakes, offering exceptional research and accommodation resources. Students gain hands-on experience in top-tier laboratories like the Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL) and the Queen's University Biology Station (QUBS). Collaborative opportunities extend to departments such as Geology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, and Mathematics & Statistics. Approximately one-third of students conduct fieldwork or research at institutions across Canada or internationally. Graduate students regularly present at regional, national, and global conferences, while many research teams conduct fieldwork locally at QUBS or in distant locations like the Arctic, Australia, and Latin American tropics.
Students must have M.Sc. in Biology or direct entry from B.Sc for exceptional candidates.
