The Department specializes in exploring the history, theory, and analysis of film, television, and digital media, while also providing hands-on training in filmmaking, video production, and digital content creation. Our program investigates cinema and television while engaging with broader themes like power structures, ideology, communication, artistic expression, marketing, consumer behavior, economic factors, and audience engagement. We analyze how other art forms—such as literature, visual arts, music, and architecture—interact with screen media, and we study the influence of cultural institutions on the film industry.
While Film and Media Studies primarily falls under the Arts (rather than Fine Arts), media production remains a core component of our program, serving as a vital tool for developing key educational objectives: cultural understanding and proficiency in visual, auditory, and technical aspects of film and video. Our approach to production combines artistic practice with rigorous study of film history and theory, alongside a sharp focus on societal and cultural contexts. This comprehensive program equips students with diverse skills for professional paths, including but not limited to careers in film and television.
