The English Department provides an extensive undergraduate curriculum that introduces students to English literature from diverse communities, time periods, and global locations. All three English programs (Major, Joint Honours, Minor) strive to maintain equilibrium between examining established authors, literary styles, and conventions while also exploring works that were historically overlooked or unrecognized. This program promotes cross-cultural and historical understanding by motivating students to interact with literary works from varied backgrounds and traditions using multiple academic perspectives. The English Major offers the most comprehensive opportunity to cultivate your knowledge of English literary traditions. Starting with fundamental methods for interpreting textual meaning, the Major guides you through various eras to demonstrate how historical influences persist in contemporary works. You'll get to study renowned works of fiction, poetry, and theater, as well as mainstream genres like young adult fiction and science fiction, plus emerging formats such as illustrated novels.
