Northern's Personal Support Worker (PSW) program prepares you for the workforce in just 12 months, equipping you to deliver essential long-term care that supports community health and wellness.
Through classroom instruction and hands-on training in our advanced labs, you'll build ethical foundations, refine communication techniques, and learn crucial medical terms and care procedures for professional success.
This program cultivates understanding, compassion, and appreciation for individual differences, helping you develop a professional demeanor that's ideal for forming meaningful client relationships.
Your training culminates with real-world experience at a long-term care facility and a career-launching certification.
As unregulated healthcare professionals, personal support workers operate under the guidance of regulated practitioners, supervisors, or clients in independent living situations. They deliver specified personal care, daily living assistance, and household management services while adhering to care plans and established protocols.
PSWs are accountable to both their clients and employers. These frontline caregivers serve as the foundation for institutional and community-based care systems.
Frequently the primary point of contact, PSWs often form strong bonds with those they assist. Their professional conduct and competencies significantly impact clients' quality of life, safety, and overall health.
Training programs like ours develop comprehensive skill sets that transcend basic care techniques, highlighting the importance of the PSW role while demonstrating genuine regard for each individual's uniqueness.
This curriculum was created in alignment with Ontario's initiative to enhance long-term care services for homebound individuals and facility residents. The two-semester PSW program combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience across various healthcare environments.
