NAIT's Chemical Technology program, recognized nationally, equips students for careers as chemical technologists in various laboratory settings including industrial, governmental, and commercial environments.
This hands-on program focuses on applying both standard and specialized lab techniques across scientific fields. With a strong practical emphasis, students develop job-ready skills by working with modern lab equipment and computer systems in NAIT's state-of-the-art Centre for Chemical Studies. The curriculum teaches students to collaborate in teams and work independently to design experiments and tackle complex challenges. Additionally, students utilize computers and specialized software for data collection, analysis, research, and creating professional reports.
Key laboratory competencies: Creating reagents and calibration standards, Synthesizing and purifying organic and inorganic compounds, Conducting qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses, Applying industry-standard analytical methods, Collecting and preparing samples for lab and field testing, Performing various analyses including spectroscopic, chromatographic, and thermogravimetric techniques, Operating and maintaining laboratory instruments
The program incorporates safety training, teaching students to conduct hazard assessments and properly handle, store, and dispose of dangerous materials following WHMIS guidelines.
First-year curriculum covers essential chemistry topics like lab safety, fundamental techniques, organic/inorganic chemistry, quantitative analysis, and physical chemistry, complemented by courses in mathematics, physics, computer applications, and communication skills.
Second-year studies delve into specialized areas including instrumental analysis, environmental chemistry, biochemistry applications, industrial processes, petroleum chemistry, and project management principles.
