An animal health technologist plays a crucial role in veterinary care teams, undertaking diverse responsibilities from patient care to diagnostic tests and client communications to support veterinarians in diagnosing, treating, and preventing animal diseases. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on training applicable to both companion and livestock practices, covering laboratory techniques, radiography, and clinical nursing. Typical weekly commitments include approximately 30 hours of classroom instruction per semester plus 15-20 hours dedicated to independent study and coursework.
Practical training occurs in NAIT's on-campus Animal Health Clinic, offering essential veterinary services for pets belonging to NAIT community members. This facility provides real-world experience in common procedures like sterilization surgeries, immunizations, and dental care.
Students in the Animal Health Technology program regularly work with sick or hurt animals of various species and sizes. Fieldwork includes visits to agricultural operations and veterinary facilities where they care for animals beyond typical household pets. Success in both the program and profession requires a sincere dedication to animal welfare. The program incorporates Work Integrated Learning (WIL), blending academic instruction with practical workplace experience to prepare students for their future careers.
