This two-year diploma, the first program of its kind in western Canada, equips students with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively assist newcomers to Canada as settlement and intercultural service professionals. The curriculum explores both fundamental and contemporary approaches to settlement work while teaching techniques for client advocacy, empowerment, and support. Coursework addresses key areas including effective communication, active listening, intercultural understanding, human rights, family systems, community building, cultural/gender/sexuality studies, anti-oppression methods, and reconciliation processes. Graduates will be qualified for positions in non-profit organizations, settlement agencies, and various municipal/provincial government departments. Career opportunities also exist with organizations collaborating with educational institutions and public libraries.
Language Arts – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
60% in English Language Arts 30-1
60% in English Language Arts 30-2
60% in ESLG 1860
60% in ESLG 1898
Note: Academic admission requirements are different from English language proficiency requirements. NorQuest College English for Academic Purposes courses may be used to meet both requirements. See below for details.
