Memorial University's Master of Science program in Scientific Computing pioneered such offerings in North America and continues to be Atlantic Canada's sole program of its kind. The institution now provides both MSc and PhD degrees in this field. These programs equip students with cutting-edge computational skills and their practical implementation across various scientific disciplines, including Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Physics, and Physical Oceanography. Participants will develop expertise in: (1) contemporary numerical methods, (2) high-performance computing systems, (3) parallel and vector computing software tools, (4) visualization and multimedia technologies, and (5) managing and analyzing extensive experimental datasets.
These interdisciplinary graduate programs benefit from faculty collaboration across multiple departments. External partners enhance the curriculum through student co-supervision, cooperative education placements, computational resource sharing, and specialized instruction. The initiative maintains strong connections with ACEnet, Atlantic Canada's premier high-performance computing network that supports much of the program's research activities.
The MSc program offers both thesis and non-thesis pathways, each with optional cooperative education components, available for full-time or part-time study. A unique program feature is its cross-disciplinary approach, producing graduates with more diverse scientific and engineering knowledge than conventional single-discipline programs.
