The Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at Memorial University of Newfoundland boasts a renowned graduate program built upon decades of research excellence. Since Memorial University launched its graduate studies in 1960, our department has offered MSc programs, expanding to include PhD studies in 1969. Today, our internationally recognized faculty guide students using globally connected research networks. Our well-funded research initiatives receive support from NSERC, CFI, and other leading organizations, while our state-of-the-art laboratories and computing resources provide exceptional research environments.
Physical oceanography research encompasses theoretical, computational, experimental, and observational approaches to planetary fluid dynamics, glacial ice sheet movements, acoustic monitoring techniques, instrumentation development, and global climate simulations. Our condensed matter physics research spans three key areas: hard condensed matter (studying high-melting-point solids, ultra-cold temperatures, and quantum phenomena); soft condensed matter (examining liquids, colloids, polymers, proteins, and biological structures); and applied physics (focusing on sensor technology and photonics).
Additional physics research specialties include particle physics and black hole studies.
The MSc program, available in either Physics or Physical Oceanography, requires four courses plus a thesis and typically takes two years of full-time study to complete.
MSc duration: 2 years
