Geography has been part of Memorial University's curriculum since 1946, achieving departmental status in 1960. The graduate program launched in 1970 with MA and MSc degrees, followed by the introduction of a PhD program in 1992. We aim to cultivate curiosity about global geography through teaching and research, equipping students with analytical methods to investigate geographical questions and effectively share their discoveries.
Graduate studies focus on diverse areas including climatology, cultural/historical/economic geography, GIS, geomorphology, Quaternary studies, regional development, remote sensing, and resource management. Newfoundland and Labrador's unique physical and human environments offer exceptional research potential. The province's coastal position in eastern Canada creates an ideal environment for examining climate patterns and Quaternary-era landscape transformations. The Atlantic region's socioeconomic characteristics present abundant opportunities to explore population trends, migration patterns, sustainable resource utilization, and rural growth. The area also provides extensive possibilities for coastal and marine environment research.
MSc Program – This two-year, full-time degree combines coursework with thesis research.
