The Department of Linguistics fosters close connections between academic instruction and scholarly investigation, prioritizing evidence-based, theoretically grounded exploration of Indigenous languages, linguistic diversity and evolution, and language learning. Our advanced degree curricula establish a robust grounding in fundamental theoretical domains (phonology, syntax, morphology, etc.) before expanding into specialized areas. Faculty provide research guidance and expertise in first and second language learning, speech pathology, along with acoustic and articulatory phonetics, incorporating both theoretical and experimental approaches.
The Linguistics Department offers instruction in various languages, with particular emphasis on graduate research involving Algonquian (Montagnais-Naskapi, Cree), Inuktitut, and Iroquoian (Cayuga). Memorial University additionally provides comprehensive course offerings in English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish, while Irish and Japanese language courses are available through the Linguistics Department.
