Memorial's Archaeology program is gaining global recognition due to its diverse faculty research, outstanding teaching, and cutting-edge facilities. We provide exceptional student opportunities in historical archaeology, archaeological sciences, and ancient indigenous studies. Our advanced laboratories focus on applied archaeological sciences, archaeobotany, archaeoentomology, conservation, and prehistoric/historical archaeology, connecting researchers with community-university projects spanning from Northern Labrador to French Guiana and from British Columbia to Northwest Europe. As one of Canada's largest Archaeology departments, we prepare graduate students to be skilled researchers, analytical thinkers, and dedicated guardians of our collective archaeological legacy.
The University approved its first Archaeology M.A. thesis in 1972, and our graduate students have since produced more than 140 Master's theses. Our doctoral program launched in 2001. Currently, the Archaeology Department provides both Master's and Ph.D. programs.
