English studies center around two core practices - reading and writing. Certain programs may prioritize writing skills, while others emphasize reading comprehension and analysis. However, these two elements are seldom treated in isolation. Pursuing an English degree provides essential training in understanding language mechanics. Within the English Department, you'll explore both contemporary and classical concepts through diverse texts ranging from avant-garde to conventional. You'll examine seminal literary works and cultural pieces while participating in stimulating discussions about interpretation, literary evolution, future trends, personal identity, and global perspectives. Our curriculum is structured to enhance analytical thinking, attentive reading, and articulate writing.
The English Department provides specialized courses at Memorial's Harlow Campus in England. From theatrical performances to literary landmarks and artistic activism, Harlow offers these enriching experiences and more.

Minimum score of 24 on the IB Diploma with completion of the required subject areas or completion of another recognized High School diploma program.
The IB certificate and career programs are not acceptable for admission unless another recognized High School diploma or certificate has been awarded.
IELTS - A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic with at least a band 6 in reading and writing General training results are not acceptable.
For admission to winter Jan 2025 and later A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing
For admission to fall Sept 2024 and earlier A minimum score of 79 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing and not less than 17 in listening and speaking.
Duolingo English Test DET until spring 2025 only - Requirement A minimum overall score of 115.
Pearson Test of Academic English PTE ACADEMIC - Requirement - For admission to winter Jan 2025 and later A minimum overall score of 60.
For admission to fall Sept 2024 and earlier A minimum score of 58 in each of the reading writing listening and speaking components of the PTE is required.
