Earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree typically involves completing at least 120 credit hours (equivalent to about 40 courses) over a four-year period. Throughout the program, students explore diverse subjects including cultural studies, philosophy, ancient and modern history, social dynamics, and the environmental factors shaping our world. This curriculum develops essential competencies in critical analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication - skills vital for thriving in an evolving global landscape.
The criminology specialization, offered through the Sociology Department, focuses on the scholarly investigation of criminal justice systems, their operational frameworks, and their intersection with legal, political, and social structures. This program particularly suits those academically curious about societal norms, deviant behaviors, legal frameworks, and various justice-related fields including law enforcement, rehabilitation services, and correctional systems. Professionals with backgrounds in police studies or those currently working in justice-related roles (such as law enforcement officers, correctional staff, or probation workers) may find this degree path especially relevant. Note that the criminology major does not provide professional certification for policing or corrections careers.
