Canadian Foreign Policy
Critical Perspectives in International Relations
Advanced Security Studies

Global South Politics
McMaster offers one of Canada's most rigorous critical international relations PhD programs. Our critical approach exposes power imbalances in global systems and works to transform these structures. The program incorporates diverse theoretical frameworks including constructivism, ecological thought, feminist theory, historical materialism, post-colonial studies, and post-structural analysis.
Faculty research intersects with themes like alternative diplomacy, citizenship and transnational activism, climate politics, global economic systems, IR theory, governance structures, post-colonial studies, and Global South politics. Doctoral candidates can participate in initiatives through the Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition, along with our yearly student-led Mapping the Global Dimensions of Policy conference.
