The Ph.D. program primarily focuses on conducting original research under a faculty advisor's guidance. Students typically select their supervisor within the first academic year, with the mathematics graduate advisor providing temporary supervision until then. While selection factors differ, aligned research interests are the key determinant. Students interact with faculty through graduate courses, research seminars, and specialized workshops, as well as informal events like weekly teas before Colloquium presentations, University Club socials afterward, and other department gatherings.

After selecting a supervisor, a committee of two or three additional faculty members is established. This group meets yearly with the student to monitor degree progress.
