The Honours Sociology Specialist program offers a comprehensive grounding in sociological principles and research techniques. Designed for ambitious students, it helps build advanced competencies to enhance career prospects or prepare for postgraduate studies.
Specialist students enjoy more intimate learning settings with increased faculty engagement. Key courses like advanced theory and specialized methods in historical, qualitative, and quantitative approaches feature smaller cohorts than standard classes. During their final year, students predominantly participate in seminar-style classes capped at 25 participants, emphasizing oral discourse on sociological topics.
The program also includes options for up to two terms of guided research courses. These enable students to refine their investigative abilities through one-on-one collaboration with faculty members. With professorial guidance, participants conduct independent research and produce scholarly papers based on their discoveries.
The program's emphasis on small-group learning fosters exceptional development of critical thinking, written communication, verbal expression, and public speaking abilities – all attributes that employers, graduate programs, and professional organizations prize highly.
Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Students are required to complete Grade 12 high school diploma equivalent to Canadian qualification.
Completion of any Level I program with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.0 (C), including a grade of at least 5.0 (C) in SOCIOL 1Z03 or SOCIOL 1A06 A/B.
