As a French student at McMaster University, you'll dive into one of Canada's official languages and a globally spoken tongue, used by millions across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, North America, and Asia. Our focus on "Francophonie et Diversité" (the French-speaking World and Diversity) exposes you to the vibrant literary and cultural heritage of Francophone communities. The Department conducts all teaching and communication in French, helping you enhance your language proficiency. Annually, we host teaching assistants from France to support students in refining their abilities. You'll have the chance to spend your third year studying abroad at a French or Quebecois university.

Beyond language learning, we provide French courses covering these disciplines:

European French Literature and Culture
Quebecois, Indigenous, and French-Canadian Literature and Culture
