The Honours BA Specialist Option provides an alternative pathway within the Economics Honours BA program, delivering comprehensive economic training with distinct features. Key differences include an extra econometrics requirement for the Specialist Option, crucial for those pursuing graduate studies in Economics. While Honours students complete Applied Econometrics (ECON 3E03), concentrating on practical applications, Specialist Option candidates take Econometrics I (ECON 3EE3), which emphasizes mathematical approaches and better prepares students for MA-level econometrics.
Specialist Option participants additionally complete Econometrics II (ECON 4G03) and have different course selections at levels III and IV. Honours students focus on Methods of Inquiry in Economics and Honours Economic Analysis, producing critical reviews and analyses. Specialist Option students undertake Research Methods in Economics and Economic Specialist Seminar, involving paper presentations and guided independent research projects.
Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Students are required to complete Grade 12 high school diploma equivalent to Canadian qualification.
Students start in the Social Sciences Level 1 program and apply to the Honours BA Specialist Program at the end of their first year. Students must complete the requirements of a Level 1 program including two Level 1Economics courses.
Completion of any Level 1 program with a Grade Point Average of 5.0 (C) including an average of at least 5.0 (C) in ECON 1B03 and 1BB3. For continuation in program, see the section on Minimum Requirements for Entering and Continuing in a Program Beyond Level 1.
