Economics is a diverse discipline focused on examining and overseeing the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. It provides analytical frameworks to explore key questions like price formation, unemployment causes, interest rate fluctuations, and international trade dynamics.
Memorial University provides major, minor, and honors programs resulting in either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in economics.
Our curriculum includes applied economics courses covering numerous specialized fields such as fisheries, petroleum and mining, forestry, environmental studies, development, international trade, monetary policy, public sector economics, welfare economics, labor markets, and health economics.
B.Sc. admission requirements for the economics major
Prospective science majors should apply to the Faculty of Science through the undergraduate admissions process, selecting bachelor of science as their program. High school applicants must meet Memorial University's general admission criteria, including prerequisite mathematics and laboratory science courses.
To declare an economics major, students must complete 30 credit hours (10 courses) with the following distribution:
six credit hours in critical reading and writing (CRW), with at least three credits in English
six credit hours in mathematics
six credit hours in economics
six credit hours in an additional science subject (excluding mathematics and economics)

Applicants shall have completed the requirements for a recognized high school diploma or equivalent.
English Language Requirements:
Duolingo English Test (DET) - A minimum score of 115.
IELTS - A minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General training results are not acceptable.
TOEFL - For admission to winter (Jan) 2025 and later: A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing; For admission to fall (Sept) 2024 and earlier: A minimum score of 79 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing, and not less than 17 in listening and speaking.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: For admission to winter (Jan) 2025 and later: A minimum overall score of 60; For admission to fall (Sept) 2024 and earlier: Minimum band scores between 50 and 60 in each of the four skills tested (reading, writing, listening and speaking), with at least two band scores of 60.
PTE Academic: A minimum score of 58 (fall (Sept) 2024); A minimum overall score of 60 ((Jan) 2025 and later).
Cambridge Assessment English: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
Michigan English Test (MET) - A minimum score of 59 is required on the MELAB.
