Our Health, Aging & Society programs enable students to examine diverse subjects like health's social influences, wellness in later life, psychological wellbeing and substance use, along with societal aspects of aging. These undergraduate programs prepare students to tackle challenges like healthcare availability, fostering positive aging attitudes, and addressing mental health and addiction through a social sciences framework.
Graduates from the Health, Aging & Society Department develop competencies in analytical thinking, written and verbal communication, and specialized understanding of health and aging through a social sciences viewpoint. This encompasses theories about health disparities, healthcare system structures, societal impacts on older populations, and the cultural dimensions of aging.
Third-year students can participate in practical field placements, collaborating with experts in their chosen specialization. The Aging and Society or Health and Society degrees can be paired with other Social Sciences or Humanities disciplines. Additionally, students may focus on Mental Health and Addiction studies within either degree program.
These programs can be enhanced with various minor options or through a Mohawk College certificate. Admission to Health, Aging & Society programs is competitive, with published minimums not ensuring acceptance. Applicants may enter Health & Society I directly after high school or transition to Aging and Society/Health and Society majors after first year.
Level II admission applications are processed through the Mosaic system in mid-March. Note: Not all listed courses are available annually.
Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Students are required to complete Grade 12 high school diploma equivalent to Canadian qualification.
Selection is based on academic achievement but requires, as a minimum, completion of any Level I program with a minimum Grade Point Average of 5.0 including a grade of at least C in HLTHAGE 1BB3 (HLTHAGE 1AA3 must be completed by the end of Level II, however students are strongly encouraged to complete this requirement in Level I).
