As a global hub for mining technology and research, Sudbury hosts the planet's largest concentration of mineral exploration and mining-service operations. The city boasts two of the deepest mines globally and serves as headquarters for multiple international mining corporations. After suffering from industrial pollution for years, Sudbury has gained UN recognition for its remarkable environmental recovery, now known as the Sudbury Protocol. Today, the city is looked to worldwide for environmental solutions. Laurentian University's close access to major mining sites including Vale, Glencore, Kidd Creek, Hemlo, Red Lake, Goldcorp, Placer Dome, and northwestern Quebec mines, along with E.B. Eddy's extensive wood processing plants in Espanola, creates an ideal living laboratory for environmental impact studies, management strategies, and ecosystem restoration research.
