In Canada, only licensed Power Engineers are authorized to oversee, maintain, and manage equipment including boilers, compressors, turbines, and refrigeration systems. Lambton College's recently upgraded 107 KW closed-loop power generation facility serves solely as a training center, situated within the Centre of Excellence in Energy & Bio-Industrial Technologies. As Ontario's sole training facility of this nature, students collaborate to generate and manage the power plant's operations. The Centre also provides access to cutting-edge laboratories featuring distillation pilot plants, water treatment systems, computer simulators, electrical and control systems, among other resources. The program equips students with operational and maintenance expertise, covering 4th Class certification in the first year and advancing to 3rd Class in the second year. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) recognizes four distinct Operating Engineer levels, with each tier involving progressively complex responsibilities that lead to higher-tier employment opportunities. The initial two years of Lambton College's Power Engineering program constitute the Power Engineering Technician (PETN) curriculum. Aligned with the standardized Power Engineer's examination committee (SOPEEC) guidelines, this program prepares students for TSSA certification exams at both the 4th and 3rd Class levels.
