In Canada, only licensed Power Engineers are authorized to oversee, maintain, and manage equipment including boilers, compressors, turbines, and refrigeration systems. Lambton College's recently upgraded 107 KW closed-loop power generation facility serves solely as a training center within the Energy & Bio-Industrial Technologies Centre of Excellence. As Ontario's sole training unit of this nature, students collaborate to run and maintain the power plant. The Centre also features cutting-edge laboratories such as distillation pilot plants, water treatment systems, computer simulators, and electrical control systems. The program builds operational and maintenance expertise, starting with 4th Class certification in the first year, progressing to 3rd Class in the second year, and achieving 2nd Class in the final year. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) recognizes four tiers of Operating Engineer status, with each level involving more advanced responsibilities leading to higher career opportunities. Lambton's Power Engineering Technology program aligns with the standardized SOPEEC curriculum, preparing students for TSSA certification exams at the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd Class levels. Achieving 2nd Class certification represents the pinnacle of power engineering training in Ontario's college system, ensuring graduates are exceptionally skilled. Notably, completing this distinctive program may qualify students for reduced Qualifying Experience Time requirements.
