The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering addresses the need for highly skilled professionals in both academic and industrial sectors. Lakehead University's MSc in Mechanical Engineering (MSc-ME) cultivates independent research skills by integrating coursework with structured research projects. This innovative program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip graduates with the tools to solve complex mechanical engineering problems encountered by industries and society. Students in the MSc-ME program enjoy personalized attention through small classes, a supportive atmosphere, and strong mentorship from faculty.
The program also features two course-based pathways that blend advanced coursework with either a research project or thesis. These options provide students with extensive knowledge of cutting-edge topics while allowing them to either execute a research project or explore new engineering frontiers through scholarly writing. Both full-time and flexible study plans are offered for course-based participants.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for admission must be graduates of a recognized university, college, or institute as well as show evidence of scholarly achievement. Except where otherwise stated in the Admission Requirements of a particular program, degree students must have a four year bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least second class standing (B) based on their last 20 half courses or equivalent.

An applicant holding a degree other than one in the discipline area to which admission is sought will be considered on the basis of courses taken and academic standing. A Qualifying Year at the undergraduate level may be required to meet the admission standards. Courses taken as part of a Qualifying Year can not be used as credit towards a graduate degree.

In addition to the general admission requirements for Master programs, the following requirements also apply:
Normal admission to the MSc-ME program requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other equivalent four-year program, with at least a 70% average, or equivalent
A make-up period of study, as recommended by the Engineering Graduate Studies Committee, may be required where the student is deficient in background undergraduate level courses. Meeting the minimum requirements does not necessarily lead to automatic admission, but depends on the availability of places in the program and on an assessment by the Engineering Graduate Studies Committee of the applicant's aptitude for graduate studies and research.

Our minimum admission requirement for international applicants is 75% or 3.0 on a 4 point Canadian scale, with an accredited university degree equivalent to a Lakehead University 4 year degree.
