The discipline of Gender and Women's Studies has undergone significant evolution since its establishment at Lakehead University in 1990. Beyond exploring women's experiences and gender structures, you'll investigate diverse areas including: Sexuality, Queer Theory, Legal Frameworks, Masculinity Studies, Global Activism, Ecofeminism, Equity Movements, Media Representations, and Bodily Politics. These subjects aim to reveal how societal beliefs limit individuals and how we can confront these barriers to promote fairness. Our Women's Studies Department embraces a multidisciplinary feminist perspective. Faculty experts specialize in feminist jurisprudence, women's wellness, queer theory, digital culture studies, and offer courses that effectively prepare students for advanced degrees in Social Justice, Canadian law programs, healthcare professions like midwifery, public safety careers, and beyond.
Pursuing an Honours degree in Women's Studies allows you to pair your coursework with a secondary major in Gerontology, Psychology, Historical Studies, Literature, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Sociology, Nature-Based Education, or Teacher Education, alongside focused study paths in Social Services.
