As international economic and cultural connections increasingly shrink our world, effective communication as global citizens grows ever more vital. Languages serve as gateways to discovery. Learning languages enhances not just communication abilities but also provides insight into the wider cultural and historical frameworks that shape our lives. Lakehead University's Language program cultivates communication mastery by offering a French major alongside opportunities to study: Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandarin, and Classical languages. In Canada, where French stands as one of two official languages, proficiency offers both career advantages and, in many fields, becomes essential. Mastering multiple languages—written, spoken, and literary—provides distinctive personal and professional benefits.
Through the Department of Languages, you'll develop: Advanced French proficiency across reading, writing, and speaking, Cultural awareness, Creative communication skills in dynamic learning settings, and Global perspectives on socio-cultural and literary themes. Prior French fluency isn't required—our curriculum supports language growth for all qualified students at every skill level.
