As economic and cultural connections strengthen across borders, shrinking our world, the ability to communicate as global citizens grows increasingly vital. Languages serve as gateways to discovery. Learning languages enhances not just communication but also deepens our grasp of the cultural and historical influences shaping our lives. Lakehead University's Language program cultivates communication skills through majors in French and explorations of Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandarin, and Classical languages. In Canada, proficiency in French—one of the nation's official languages—isn't just advantageous but often essential for career success. Mastering multiple languages, both written and spoken, along with their literary traditions, offers distinct personal and professional advantages.
Through the Department of Languages, you'll develop: Advanced French proficiency across reading, writing, and speaking, Cultural awareness, Communication abilities in an innovative learning setting, and Knowledge of global socio-cultural and literary themes. Prior French fluency isn't required—our courses support language growth for all skill levels, provided admission criteria are satisfied.
