This 21-week course trains students to become Mason (Bricklayer) apprentices. Masons perform diverse tasks ranging from basic wall construction to intricate high-rise facade installations. The curriculum covers blueprint reading, building regulations, safety standards, and hazardous material protocols. Hands-on training includes outdoor projects using various tools and materials like brick, concrete, glass block, terra cotta, and stone for both simple and decorative walls.
Upon completing the Foundation program, students take the Masonry Level 1 certification exam. Successful graduates earn credit toward their Masonry Level 1 apprenticeship and receive 400 hours of work experience recognition.
Foundation programs develop in-demand trade skills. To advance as an apprentice, participants must secure employer sponsorship and register with SkilledTradesBC. Ideal candidates enjoy constructing and assembling structures from technical plans. The physically demanding work occurs outdoors and involves prolonged standing, bending, and heavy lifting.
Graduates qualify for positions with construction firms and masonry contractors. With further training and experience, advancement to supervisory roles becomes possible.
