The Building Renovation Technology program is a three-year advanced diploma offering that includes cooperative education. Participants will gain expertise in organizing, executing, and overseeing construction and renovation initiatives. Through two co-op work terms, graduates will acquire practical competencies. This comprehensive program readies students to coordinate, supervise, and direct various construction and remodeling ventures while providing them with the knowledge to handle both technical and administrative aspects of residential and light commercial construction projects.
The curriculum incorporates updates to the Ontario Building Code implemented in January 2017, which significantly raised standards for sustainable and energy-efficient structures.Program ObjectivesGraduates will have reliably achieved the capacity to1. implement continuous learning approaches to stay abreast of industry developments, improve job performance, and investigate career paths.2. adhere to and oversee workplace safety protocols in alignment with current laws and guidelines.3. formulate cost estimates and ensure project adherence to contract terms, building codes, legal requirements, and professional ethics in construction and renovation.4. incorporate and sustain eco-friendly approaches throughout construction and remodeling processes.5. coordinate collaboration between various tradespeople and project participants to ensure efficient project completion.6. analyze project blueprints and create technical drawings to facilitate construction and renovation work.7. utilize digital tools to gather, process, organize, and share construction-related information.8. resolve technical challenges in construction projects by applying advanced mathematics, architectural principles, and building science concepts.9. properly maintain and safely operate both manual and power tools for measuring, cutting, and assembly tasks.10. execute all phases of construction, from foundation work to final finishes, following design specifications and sustainable practices.11. assess techniques, materials, and equipment used in construction and renovation projects.Professional PathwaysGraduates of Fanshawe’s Building Renovation Technology program can pursue entry-level roles in residential and light commercial construction, working with custom builders, renovation specialists, carpentry teams, contracting firms, inspection services, cost estimators, sustainable construction companies, and project coordination teams.Sample career options for program graduates include:Survey TechnicianOperate advanced surveying equipment including robotic stations, digital levels, and 3D scanners to support field survey teams.Maintenance AssistantEngage in diverse tasks including fence and deck construction, woodworking, masonry work, and wall repair.Environmental Systems TechnicianExecute specialized electrical work involving digital and pneumatic control systems for building environments.
