The Philosophy Major at KPU offers students a comprehensive education in key areas of Western Philosophy. Students in this program will study logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and the history of philosophy. Designed to meet diverse educational goals, the curriculum emphasizes cultivating critical thinking and writing abilities, both broadly and within specialized philosophical research. KPU philosophy students benefit from an engaging academic environment that fosters intellectual growth while equipping them for graduate studies. The program also nurtures civic engagement, leadership qualities, and essential reasoning, writing, and analytical skills valuable across all professional fields.
The Bachelor of Arts Major in Philosophy enables students to establish a strong foundation in this fundamental humanities discipline. Every philosophy student completes an introductory formal logic course. At the intermediate level, five required courses cover Moral Theory (examining ethical principles), Metaphysics (exploring reality's nature), Epistemology (investigating knowledge boundaries), Ancient Greek Philosophy, and Modern Philosophy.
Advanced students can choose from several pathways: specialized seminar-style courses on philosophical topics; an Applied Ethics concentration featuring tailored courses in Business, Environmental, and Biomedical Ethics; a Practicum course strengthening research and professional skills; or an honors program culminating in a thesis project.
