The Department of Sociology focuses on contemporary social challenges and their analysis.
Through sociology, students learn to link personal experiences with wider societal frameworks and dynamics.
As a branch of sociology, criminology examines both legal and non-legal penalties, exploring their impact on individuals, law enforcement, judicial systems, and societal responses.
Students can pursue undergraduate degrees in either Sociology or Criminology, beginning with foundational courses like Sociology 1020, 1020WX, or 1021E before specializing in their second year.
Graduates in these fields gain access to diverse career opportunities in areas such as legal professions, media, social services, education, public policy, law enforcement, and government roles.
The department provides three- and four-year Major programs in both disciplines, along with four-year Honours Specializations. Students may also choose Minor concentrations or combine sociology/criminology studies with complementary fields like Psychology, Political Science, Social Work, or History.
