Human Rights are founded on the principle that all individuals merit equal respect and possess intrinsic worth. But how do we advance toward these objectives? Human Rights Studies critically examines both our successes and shortcomings in upholding these principles across various contexts and historical periods. It provides students with the analytical tools and practical competencies required to investigate, comprehend, and advocate—empowering them to champion the universal recognition of human dignity and entitlements.
This innovative interdisciplinary program combines perspectives from multiple fields to give students both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in the evolving domain of human rights.
These represent the most essential liberties and entitlements inherent to every person, encompassing equality, respect, employment opportunities, education access, and freedoms of thought and speech. According to the United Nations, "these rights apply to all people, without exception."
Through multidisciplinary methods, King's Human Rights Studies prepares students to analyze and evaluate the efficacy of legal, diplomatic, and political systems designed to safeguard human rights.
The curriculum additionally explores how diverse communities have interpreted and campaigned for broader rights protections throughout different eras.
Course subjects address gender equality; minority protections; refugee crises; Indigenous peoples' rights; and legal recourse for human rights abuses in national and international jurisdictions.
