Humber's Building Construction Technician diploma is one of three interconnected programs in the Carpentry-Construction cluster. This program, along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma, provides foundational carpentry skills while teaching industry standards and regulatory compliance. The diploma serves as a pathway to the advanced diploma program. The curriculum covers occupational health and safety requirements per current legislation, blueprint interpretation, and construction work that meets contractual, legal, and ethical standards, including sustainable building methods.
Students will develop skills in creating technical drawings and project documentation, contributing to cost estimates, and proper tool operation. The training prepares graduates for all construction phases - from initial site preparation to final interior and exterior finishes. Program graduates typically begin their careers as residential carpentry apprentices, with opportunities to advance into construction management and commercial carpentry roles. Successful students may also qualify for commercial sector positions such as junior estimator, assistant site superintendent, or entry-level project coordinator.
An optional co-op placement is available, allowing students to practice their skills in real-world settings. This work experience helps develop professional competencies, industry connections, and workplace understanding while complementing academic studies.
