The Honours Bachelor of Interpretation (ASL-English) program integrates academic theory, practical training, research, and professional internships to equip students for careers as certified interpreters. This specialized degree program (C302) was created in response to increasing industry demand for skilled American Sign Language interpreters, providing comprehensive preparation for this evolving profession.
Interpreters serve as bilingual-bicultural communication specialists who bridge language and cultural gaps between individuals.
Successful sign language interpreters need exceptional hand coordination, analytical skills, spatial awareness, strong memory retention, and advanced cognitive processing to achieve real-time bilingual-bicultural communication that surpasses basic conversational skills. For hearing interpreters, these requirements additionally include acute auditory processing capabilities.
