Fleming College's Paralegal program equips graduates to fulfill Ontario's paralegal licensing requirements. This Law Society of Ontario-accredited program enables licensed paralegals to notarize documents and represent clients in Small Claims Court cases. They can defend individuals facing charges under municipal bylaws, provincial laws, or the Criminal Code, with some working in by-law enforcement or municipal prosecution roles. Paralegals also guide clients through tribunal processes including the Landlord and Tenant Board, Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. While many paralegals work alongside lawyers or other legal professionals, others provide services directly to clients.
The mandatory 160-hour unpaid placement offers valuable career insight, available during the final 15-week semester or extending beyond academic completion. Placements must align with LSUC practice guidelines, with some employers requiring a clean criminal record check.
